1. Shirodhara Ayurveda Therapy
Shirodhara for Rejuvenation
- Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.
Shirodhara is usually the usage of specific oils poured continuously on the centre of the forehead, and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. In Sanskrit, ‘shirah’ means head and ‘dhaara’ means flow. The group of nerve endings on the forehead or the Ajna Chakra is responsible for our emotional states. This steady rhythmic pouring of oil allows the body to enter into a state of deep relaxation.
Shirodhara can also be further classified based on the medium used for pouring. If oil is used for pouring, it is called tailadhara. Herbal or medicinal oils are used in tailadhara depending on the condition of the person. If buttermilk is used, then it is called as takradhara. Buttermilk can be combined with herbs too.
If milk is used, it is called ksheera dhara. Here again, the milk can be combined with herbs. When coconut water or plain water is used, it is called jaladhara. Each of these have their own effect depending on the type of dhara and the medicinal herbs used.
Method – The person who has to undergo the Shirodhara treatment lies on a table. The Shirodhara vessel is a wide mouthed bowl with a small hole at the bottom and a wick is inserted through the hole. This vessel is hung over the head of the person such that the wick is about two inches above the forehead of the person. The vessel is filled with the required medium and is made to flow in a continuous stream through the wick on to the upper part of the forehead. A cloth or cotton pad is placed above the forehead to prevent the medium flowing to the eyes. The warm oil or other medium used, is collected, re-circulated, and the process continues for a certain duration as suggested by the practitioner. On completion of the flow of oil, the client is allowed to rest for a few minutes, before the residual oil is wiped from the hair. It is recommended to rest quietly for at least a few hours after this treatment. At Ayurvedagram, lukewarm herbal oil is poured in a continuous stream onto the forehead, while receiving a gentle massage on the head in a Shirodhara therapy. Providing massage has multiple benefits.
Benefits – Shirodhara rejuvenates and revitalizes the body and mind, and relieves stress and strain related problems, slows the aging process, improves memory and is known to have a curative effect for paralysis, insomnia, depression, anxiety, hypertension and other neurological malfunctions. It bestows better vision, better hearing, clears nasal problems and calms the body and mind. Shirodhara ultimately strengthens the physical constitution of the individual.

Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.
It is very useful for stress reduction and treating diseases associated with depression, anxiety and mental fatigue. Shirodhara reduces fatigue and initiate a soothing effect on brain cells. It might be working due to the effect of a soothing sensation of poured liquids through peripheral nerves of the skin of the forehead and then they go to the brain with calming and soothing energies, which help to reduce stress and induce sleep. Due to constant flow of liquids over the head, Shirodhara tranquilizes and stabilizes the mind, so the mind becomes serene and calmed. It calms an unquiet mind and induces rest. If your insomnia stems from working the night shift and your wake-sleep cycle is out of sync with the natural rhythms of the sun shirodhara can assist in removing fatigue, restoring energy and re-establishing harmony in the doshas or constitution.
If you’re a frequent flyer and your daily sleep rhythm is often out of sync and you suffer jet lag, shirodhara can help reset your daily pattern of waking and sleeping as well as remove built up fatigue. It also balances one’s energy level. If you are in need of rest and relaxation, the process will provide you that. If you are well rested the process will enhance your clarity and perception.
Shirodhara increases immunity by relieving stress and worry, and balancing the Ayurveda mind-body types or doshas so that your constitution remains strong.
Shirodhara gives deep rest and renewed energy producing an ageless and youthful countenance. Shirodhara relieves stress, worry and excessive thought. It gives total relaxation as if from meditation. This naturally relaxes and rejuvenates the face and softens worry lines.
How does shirodhara work?
There are a few ways to look at how shirodhara works it’s magic.
According to Ayurveda, shirodhara is beneficial for Vata and Pitta dosha. When out of balance, Vata dosha exhibits as fear, insecurity, worry, racing thoughts. Out of balance Pitta dosha exhibits as anger, irritability, frustration, judgment.
The action and qualities of the liquid used in shirodhara counters the qualities of the out of balance doshas. It soothes, nourishes and pacifies the doshas through the application of the liquid to the forehead, scalp and nervous system.
In the Spring 1995 issue of the journal of The Ayurvedic Institute ‘Ayurveda Today’, Ayurvedic practitioner Ed Danaher explains how shirodhara affects stress.
Stress, according to Ayurveda, is a state of imbalance of prana vayu, sadaka pitta, and tarpaka kapha. Shirodhara reestablishes the functional integrity between these three doshic subtypes and thus helps alleviate stress.
According to this study, the gentle pressure of the oil falling onto the forehead may also play a role in inducing rest.
In the procedure of Shirodhara, particular pressure and vibration is created over the forehead. The vibration is amplified by the hollow sinus present in the frontal bone. The vibration is then transmitted inwards through the fluid medium of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This vibration along with little temperature may activate the functions of thalamus and the basal fore brain which then brings the amount of serotonin and catecholamine to the normal stage inducing the sleep.
Again, it is explained in modern text books of physiology that pressure has an effect on impulse conduction through tactile and thermo receptors. If prolonged pressure is applied to a nerve, impulse conduction in interrupted and part of the body may go to rest. In Dhara therapy, prolonged and continuous pressure due to pouring of the medicated liquid may cause tranquility of mind and induce natural sleep.

Ksheera dhara is one of the important treatments among Kerala special treatments.

It relieves constipation, distension, chronic fever, cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart pain, backache, sciatica and other pains in the joints. Many other vata disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and headaches may also be treated with basti.
Vata is the main etiological factor in the manifestation of diseases. It is the motive force behind the elimination and retention of faeces, urine, bile and other excreta. Vata is mainly located in the large intestine, but bone tissue (asthi dhatu) is also a site for vata. Hence the medication administered rectally effects asthi dhatu. The mucus membrane of the colon is related to the outer covering of the bones (periosteum), which nourishes the bones.
